The Sonne in Küsnacht-Zurich: A boutique hotel where history, hospitality and culinary enjoyment come together
Since 1641, the Sonne has welcomed guests from near and far. Situated right on the shores of Lake Zurich, it combines centuries of history with warm hospitality and culinary enjoyment. Its central location – just 13 minutes from Zurich city centre and 25 minutes from the airport – makes this 4-star superior hotel a special retreat for anyone who appreciates a welcoming atmosphere and a sense of individuality.
Thanks to its excellent public transport connections, the Sonne is easy to reach – by boat and train, too. The hotel is also an ideal base from which to explore the region and Switzerland. Thirty-seven individually designed rooms and three junior suites cater to a range of needs. Measuring around 50 m², the junior suites are located in the historic tower and offer beautiful views of Lake Zurich. Twin beds, a comfortable seating area and Bang & Olufsen sound systems combine comfort with carefully selected design. The spacious family rooms can accommodate up to four people. They feature either twin beds or a queen-size bed, a desk, a seating area and a sofa bed. The rooms are spread across the main building and the lake house, with many offering lake views. Individually selected materials and distinctive design details give each room its own character.
Three restaurants and a bar invite you to discover the Sonne’s culinary variety. Awarded 14 GaultMillau points, the Pavillon restaurant serves classics and dishes with an international influence. In the rustic Gaststuben guests can enjoy seasonal Swiss cuisine. During the warmer months, those who prefer a more informal setting will find a selection of dishes at the Seegarten self-service restaurant, developed together with star chef Heiko Nieder. The Pavillon Bar menu ranges from signature cocktails to mocktails. In the Turmbar, with its distinctive ship-shaped counter, the day comes to a relaxed close over an aperitif or a drink. From November to February, a winter landscape, festive decorations and atmospheric lighting throughout the hotel and Seegarten create special moments.
The 110 m² fitness and wellness area includes a sauna, steam room, ice grotto, Kneipp pool, relaxation room and workout studio. With direct access to the lake and a sunbathing lawn, it becomes a place of calm and relaxation, particularly during the warmer months. Stand-up paddleboards and e-bikes are available to hire on site, inviting you to explore the surrounding area actively.
Five versatile rooms and halls are available for banquets, seminars, meetings, private events and corporate celebrations, accommodating up to 160 people. Measuring 190 m², the magnificent ballroom provides the perfect setting for large celebrations, banquets and weddings. The Turmsaal (50 m²) and Küsnachterstube (40 m²) combine historic charm with space for medium-sized events and meetings. For smaller, more intimate occasions, the Guggenbühlstube and Prunkstube are ideal, each measuring 24 m². The Seewiese adds a special outdoor venue directly on the shores of Lake Zurich. Our three-person events team will provide personal advice and support you throughout the planning and organisation of your event.
The art collection displayed in the hotel’s public areas also shapes the character of this historic establishment. Works by renowned Swiss artists such as Augusto Giacometti and Alois Carigiet are displayed alongside international names including Andy Warhol and Julian Schnabel – each telling its own story.
